Top 10 SNES Games

These are my choices of what the top 10 SNES games are. I'm sure there will be disagreements, but that's expected. However, I did choose 10 SNES games that were popular, so each game can be justified for its place on here, and hopefully not cause too much distress. :)

The ordering of the list was done randomly.

1. Super Mario World

Super Mario World is the fourth game in the Super Mario series, and is a 1990 platform video game developed and published by Nintendo as a pack-in launch title for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

The storyline of the game is like most of the Mario platform games, princess Toadstool (princess Peach) is captured, and Mario, Luigi and Yoshi embark on a quest to go and save her from the ever-so villainous villain that is Bowser.

It was received well by critics having an average score of 96%. The game sold over 20 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling games of all-time. Since then, the little plumber has grown in popularity and has many game titles to his name.

2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

'The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past' was the third instalment of the Zelda series, and is a 2D action-adventure video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

It was released in 1991 in Japan and 1992 in North America and Europe.

The basic plot involves a young boy named Link, who totally by fault of his own, becomes involved in a quest to save Hyrule from the evil clutches of Ganon.

The game sold over 4.61 million units worldwide and remains to this day on Nintendo's top-selling games list. It scored an average of just over 92% and has appeared on many 'best games' lists.

3. Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995.

It was the third best-selling game of 1995, selling more than 2.6 million copies. It has since been considered one of the best games of all-time.

The game had a great reception by critics upon release who all ranked the game with high scores. The average score was 95%.

The game has since been remade for the PlayStation and Nintendo DS, as-well as virtual console and mobile phones.

4. Final Fantasy III

Final Fantasy III is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix), released in 1994 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System as a part of the Final Fantasy series. It was later renamed Final Fantasy VI because when it was first released in North America, as the original Final Fantasy III had not been released outside of Japan at the time, it was given the name of Final Fantasy III.

The game has sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide, with 2.6 million of those being sold to people in Japan alone. The game was well-received and had an average score of 94%.

5. Super Metroid

Super Metroid  was released in Japan on March 19, 1994, in North America on April 18, 1994, and in Europe and Australia on July 28, 1994.

It is an action-adventure video game and the third game in the Metroid series. It was designed by Nintendo Research & Development 1, programmed by Intelligent Systems, and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

The game's plot follows Samus Aran as she pursues Space Pirates to retrieve a stolen Metroid.

It received an average review of 95%, but failed to sell a huge amount of copies, with more commercially popular games, like Donkey Kong Country, and Sony's release of the PlayStation.

Nintendo decided to make another Metroid game again eight years later called Metroid Prime (Gamecube). Since this, Metroid has grown in popularity.

6. Mega-Man X

Mega Man X is a video game developed by Capcom for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It is the first Mega Man game for the console and the first game in the Mega Man X series.

Mega Man X was first published in Japan on December 12, 1993 and was released in both North America and Europe in 1994.

Mega Man X is set in a futuristic world 100 years after the original Mega Man series, populated by both humans and robots, which are capable of thinking, feeling, and growing like their human creators.

Mega Man X received a good response and was accepted into the video-gaming industry. However, the game did also receive criticism, noting that the game could be too easy and a little too short. It managed a respectable average score of 87%.

7. Donkey Kong Country

Donkey Kong Country is a side-scrolling platformer video game developed by Rare, featuring the character Donkey Kong. It was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1994.

Out of all the SNES games, Donkey Kong Country is the one that sticks out in my mind the most, not sure why, it just does.

It was the first Donkey Kong game not produced or directed by the character's original creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, having said that however, Miyamoto was still involved in the project. The game was one of the first games to use pre-rendered 3d graphics.

The game was very successful on release and went on to sell over 9 million copies. Its reviews were all nearer the top end of the scale, averaging out at just over 90%. Top banana.

8. Star Fox

Star Fox was released in the spring of 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It was the first three-dimensional Nintendo game, and it included the Super FX chip, a coprocessor used to accelerate graphics display.

Due to a game of the same name and subsequent trademark issues in certain regions, Star Fox was named Starwing in Europe and Australia.

The basic plot sees Star McCloud and the rest of the Star Fox team pitting-up against the attacking forces of Andross to protect their homeworld of Corneria.

The game received good feedback, and was unusual in the fact that it was using 3d polygonal play, however it has an average review mark of 86%.

9. Yoshi's Island

Yoshi's Island is a platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the SNES console. Despite its title, this game serves as a prequel to all other games within the established Mario Bros timeline.

Mario does make an appearance in the game, but only featuring as a helpless infant. What made this game differ from those previously in the Mario series was that, instead of controlling Mario himself, the player/gamer would control Mario whilst riding on various Yoshi dinosaurs.

The game when first released, received an overwhelming amount of praise, and was subsequently awarded 'best action game of 1995'. The game sold over 4 million copies and received an average review mark of 95%.

10. Super Mario Kart

Finally last on the list, but certainly by no means the least, is Super Mario Kart. It is a go-kart racing video game developed by Nintendo EAD for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), and was the first Mario Kart game of the series.

The game was based around racing characters that were involved in the Mario series around Mario series themed tracks. The goal was simple, win the race with or without the use of the item boxes. There was also a time trial mode and a battle mode.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the producer of the Mario Kart series, has been involved in every single Mario Kart game up to present.

The game was a roaring success with popular approval for the plumber and his pals racing around tracks at high speeds. The game sold over 8 million copies and received an average score of 95%.
