We all know that we need liquid to survive. We also know that water is healthy for us, but why should we drink lots of it and not other drinks?
Compared with other drinks, I know that water wouldn't be the first choice on my list if I was to go off of taste.
Despite this, water is recommended for our health and should be drank in large quantities daily.
Regarding most people - we either drink anything other than water, or we don't drink enough.
I decided that I was going to start drinking more water for the benefits, and have the self discipline to see it through.
Although we know that we should drink water, the reasons for doing so are a bit hazy. So here is a list of the benefits to drinking lots of water:
1. Energy
If you are dehydrated, it can lower your energy levels and cause tiredness - even if you're mildly dehydrated, it can have an affect on your body. The most common cause of daytime fatigue is mild dehydration.
2. Weight
Water helps maintain a healthy body weight by increasing metabolism. It can help in weight loss as well, its a great appetite suppressant and normally replaces our unhealthy sugary drinks. Water has no sugars, salts, carbohydrates, fat, and so is the perfect drink for our health.
3. Decrease the risk of Cancer
Drinking enough water can help decrease the risk of certain cancers, including: bladder cancer by 50% ; breast cancer; and colon cancer by 45%.
4. Reduce joint pain
Drinking adequate amount of water can for many sufferers alleviate joint and back pain. Drinking water regularly will help to prevent conditions like arthritis.
5. Flushing out waste
The body uses water to help flush out harmful toxins and other waste products that can cause diseases. In fact if you have a look at the colour of your urine, the clearer it is, the more hydrated you are. Whereas the darker it is, the more dehydrated you are. Darker urine also has a much more potent smell than clearer urine.
6. Reduce/Prevent headaches
Water can help prevent and pacify headaches. A common cause of headaches can be purely down to not drinking enough water.
7. Better Digestion
Water aids your digestion of foods and can prevent constipation.(Often caused because of dehydration).
8. Skin Care
Drinking lots of water can help in clearing up your skin, people often note that their skin has a healthy look after consistently drinking lots of water. In fact it naturally moisturises skin and ensures proper cellular formation underneath the layers of skin, giving a healthy glow.
9. Circulation
Water is essential for proper blood circulation as its the leading methods of transportation for all nutrients inside the body.
10. Healthier heart
If you drink more than five glasses of water a day, studies show that you are less likely to be at risk of a heart attack, and those who drink less than two glasses of water a day are 41% more likely to die from a heart attack.
How much water should you drink a day?
Now I've listed the benefits (I'm sure there are more) of drinking lots of water, now I'll go through the daily guideline of how much you should drink.
Firstly, its not an identical amount for every person, but is varied for different people. For example factors like: If you are over or underweight; if you do a lot of exercise; if you are sick etc.
The average amount of water you should be drinking a day is 2 litres (at least).
