Correct Naming of Show Awards

Since my good buddy Jeff went off on his blog about how inconsiderate it is for kids to interrupt a judge while giving reasons to shake their hand.... I felt the urge to discuss a pet peeve of MINE.

Correct naming of show awards.

I saw an article like this many years ago in the National Livestock Exhibitor, written by Eldon Miller, and it has stuck with me ever sense. In general, there is a TON of inconsistency in how people list their awards. Here is a good list to use.

SUPREME CHAMPION: This is used to identify the ONE supreme champion of the entire show. An example like this would be when all breed champions go in the ring together to compete and the judge selects the winner amongst multiple breeds.

GRAND CHAMPION: This would be used to identify the one single champion of a breed. I.e. Grand Champion Angus Heifer.

CLASS WINNER: I know some would disagree with me, but I prefer class winner...not class champion. To me the word CHAMPION should be reserved for honors higher than a class.

Now additionally, I have a personal preference on how you represent championships.

For example, if you use a caption on a photo of "Many time champion", this would refer to an animal that has been selected as Grand Champion of the entire breed 2 or more times. This is not acceptable to use for an animal that you showed for 2 years that never won anything, but you decided just to call them a "Many Time Champion" since he was on your showstring. Be honest about the awards. If he won his class a lot, call him a "Many Time Class Winner" or "Consistent Class Winner" to accurately describe the accomplishments.

National Champion. This is another one to watch. The phrase National Champion refers to the ONE grand champion of the show. The grand champion. Not the reserve. Not the class winner. A Reserve Calf Champion is not a national champion. It might be a National Reserve Division Champion -- which is very impressive in itself, but still, not a national champion.

Finally, word order is important when dealing with reserves. For example:

Reserve Grand Champion Bull
Reserve Senior Champion Bull (Not Senior Reserve Champion Bull)
2nd in class is not appropriate to say "Reserve Class Champion"

Off the soap box. For now.

Did you know that here at RHD, we are a bunch of Christmas freaks. We love it. Especially Stacey. She would wear a Santa hat every day if she could!

So in honor of this special time, we are excited to announce a HUGE promotion we will have going on from December 1 to 16....The 12 Days of Christmas RHD Style!

2011 has been an amazing year for us. Each year we keep saying it was our "best year ever" and once again, we have been really blessed with our "best year ever" in 2011.

Our customers and our fans make our success possible, without a doubt. So we have come up with the 12 Days of Christmas, RHD Style, to reward and thank those who make RHD a success.

So here's how it works.

1. First, you must be a fan of our facebook page. Click here to join and "Like" our page.

2. Each work day, (no weekends) we will be giving away two types of prizes. First, we will have a daily Christmas trivia question. The first person to answer the question correctly will win the prize for that day. The prizes start small and build up to the grand finale prize on the 12th day.

3. While only one person wins the daily prize, each day we will also be posting a special "12 Days of Christmas" Coupon that ANY of our fans can print off and use for our services here at RHD. Each day will be different. You'll have 1 week to book a project and claim the coupon.

And we promise, the prizes aren't going to be chinchy little things like a free koozie. They are going to be stuff you will LOVE!!!!

Watch for the First Day of Christmas....Thursday, December 1st.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
and Remember..JESUS is the Reason For the Season!!!

LOVE Y'ALL!

Best of the Barns "Too Close to Calls"

With just a few days left in our 2011 Best of the Barns voting, we have about 14 categories that are literally just too close to call!! In these categories, there are less than 20 votes separating the contestants! So I know you have an opinion on who the best of these are....go vote!

11 Tips to Revise Effectively

I hate exams (like a lot of us), and even worse is when I have no idea what any of the answers are. In a position like this it's not surprising to see an end result of a fail or a very low score.

Revising can prevent this feeling (or at least help you to feel more confidant during the exam). I once heard from a academic that anyone can pass an exam with good marks, it just depends if and how they revise.

As I have a few electrical exams coming up and a music theory exam as-well, I thought it would be a good idea to share some revising tips and which one I find the best.

1. Summary Papers

I thought I would start with my preferred method of revision, and that is to make summarised notes on a page. About 80% (or sometimes more) of the information that we take in when learning is useless, and only 20% (or less) being the key parts. So with this in mind, I divide the page into two long sections (A4 paper,) and start making subtitles with the key points underneath.

The summaries of each sub-heading may take up only a few lines, maybe a whole page, maybe more, the main thing is that you're just noting down the important exam points.
For my last main exams I took (all about electrics), I had only 12 sides of A4 summary pages to revise - which beats reading through books upon books in my opinion.

2. No Distractions

However good a multitasker you think you are, you wont be able to revise effectively with noise and interruptions (e.g. the t.v.).

In order to concentrate fully on the information you're trying to absorb, quietness is the best way to go.
If you're in a position where it wont be possible to revise quietly, then more revision will have to be done so you can ground the information into your mind.

I have heard however that baroque music helps while studying. Here's the link to the page: Music moves brain.

3. Questioning

Get your friends and family members to question you, particularly the parts you're struggling with. This is a great memorisation technique.

4. Past exam papers

Past papers are an excellent resource for revision and definitely help if done correctly.

When I did this in the past I would go back over my test (once completed) and tally up all my wrong answers. I then would correct myself mentally and say the right answers out-loud before proceeding to redo the whole test. I would repeat this process until I had no answers incorrect. I did about sixteen different practice exams in this style, It was long and hard but I think I achieved 100% for the exam I took.

5. Study-buddy

Despite the sub-heading it doesn't just have to be just one person you have to study with, it could be a whole group.

This can be really beneficial as questions will be thrown this way and that way, resulting in acquired exam knowledge.
The downside is that you may be tempted to muck around, but if you're all serious about revising then it should be fine.

6. Take breaks

Breaks are essential for optimizing the time you spend revising. You are human like the rest of us and our brains become fatigued if pushed too far. This is why short regular intervals are necessary. Whilst you take these breaks, get a drink of water to keep you hydrated and some fruit for those essential vitamins.

A rough guideline to when one should take these breaks is up to oneself, I suggest every 45-60 minutes.

7. Mind maps

For people who are visual learners mind maps are great. Choose a heading to start with, place it in the middle of your page and branch off sub-headings from it. Then sub-headings from the sub-heading etc.

Personally they're not my style but for a lot of people they work really well.

8. Diagrams and sketches

Another great one for visual learners is the inclusion of colour, pictures, diagrams, sketches and the like, can really help to solidify the points in your mind.

9. Repetition

It's a sensible to decide to revise, however if you're going to revise just the once, chances are that you're not going to remember a lot in the exam. Repetition and consistency must be used in order for you to reach and maintain your peak amount of knowledge on the subject.

If you want to I have a previous post about self-discipline for reading.

10. Revise in plenty of time

Don't put revising off when you know that you have an exam coming up. Force yourself to study, you'll find that once you start it isn't as bad as you were expecting it to be. Quite often the worst part about revising is thinking about revising.
On the day of the exam you'll be glad you did that revision.

11. Revision cards

Create your own pocket-sized revision cards to carry around. Whenever you have some downtime take out your cards and read them over. For example: on a train, on a bus, whilst in a queue etc.
If only one thing sticks in your mind afterwards, then it's time well spent, after all it is during downtime.

Like I said at the start, exams are hated by many of us and can bring misery about. If you do revise though with one of the above study methods or a different way that works for you you'll do better.

Remember, you're not the only one who's ever been under this amount of stress.
If anyone who's reading this is taking an exam of some sort, I wish you good luck.

I'm Thankful For...
-the wife who says "it's hot dogs tonight", because it means she is home with me and not out with someone else.

- the husband who is on the sofa being a couch potato because he is home with me and not out at the bars.

- the mess to clean after a party because it means i have been surrounded by friends.

- the clothes that fit a little too tightly because it means I have enough to eat.

- my a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing because it means that I have a house.

- all of the complaining I hear about the government, because it means we have freedom of speech.

- the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot, because it means I am capable of walking and have been blessed with transportation.

- my huge heating bill, because it means I am warm.

- the pile of laundry and ironing because it means I have clothes to wear.

- aching muscles at the end of the day, because it means I am capable of working hard.

How to Improve your Observational Skills

Observation is a great skill you can develop, picking up many useful bits of information and facts in your daily life. With observation you will be able to make better estimated thoughts and decisions about certain matters.

All of us watch what goes on around us and our sub-conscious is always taking things in, however, many of us aren't observers and don't look or think in depth about things.

This is especially essential for a lot of careers, when studying or when having a debate. To process the information logically and derive at some well-thought conclusions, observation is key.

1. Deep thinking

Think about the things that are on your mind and things you're unsure about. Often applying a deep level of concentration and thought, a clear decision can be made.

It can also help you to avoid errors and blunders you may make concerning particular subjects.

2. Listening

Listening is one of the best means of observation. You can gather so many bits of information to make justified decisions and reduce the amount of regretful comments that may slip from your mouth.

A useful word of wisdom from proverbs says: be quick to listen and slow to speak.

3. Ask yourself questions

Before you ask someone a question about something you're unfamiliar with, try asking yourself the question(s), and try to come up with one or more conclusion(s).

Normally along-side point #1 (deep thinking), you can solve many questions you may have. This in turn will help with your observation because you're starting to make clear verdicts by yourself.

4. Photo/Picture analysis

This exercise is another good one for improving your observation. There are different ways you can go about doing photo/picture analysis; one would be to decide if a photo/picture is fake or real. You can find exercises on the Internet that do this.

A second suggestion is to dig out old photos of your own and analyse what's going on. Study expressions, backgrounds and anything else that you notice. If you have photos of people without everyone posing - the better. These usually provide a better challenge and can give more of a result.

A third one is one you may have played before and that is: spot the difference. A game that forces you to observe two identical pictures with little differences (I suppose making them not identical).

5. Chess

I've wrote about chess before and how it can improve concentration (naturally improving observation) amongst other things. If you would like to read more about this, click on the link: 10 Reasons why you should play chess.

6. Monitor people

Similar to point 4 (photo/picture analysis), but instead of studying snapshots of different settings, you'll be monitoring things in real time.

Study different people: consider where they might be going, their emotional state, body language, what they could be thinking about. It's another simple exercise you can implement to better your observation.

Jobs that involve observation
  • Police/detective,
  • Teachers and academicians,
  • Psychologists,
  • Researchers,
  • Doctors and medicinal workers,
  • Artist
  • Graphic designer
  • Photographer,
  • Musician,
  • Writers and poets,
  • Reviewers and critics,
  • Psychiatrists,
  • Sports trainers.
These are just a few jobs that involve observation.

Denver Sign Orders

If you've been to any of the big shows this fall, chances are you noticed some of the awesome work of RHD in many areas. But one of our most popular services during this time of year is stall signs. We offer stall signs of all shapes and sizes and these are a necessity for every farm or ranch taking cattle to Denver, or any show for that matter.

We finally broke down and got some new signs for V8 Shorthorns for Louisville....and I couldn't believe how many people said how they loved the signs. They also commented on how easy it was to spot our stalls because the signs stood out so much. Now, if only I can get my dad convinced to get away from the handwritten signs we use in our Brahman showstring. I doubt that will ever happen honestly.

As we've been really hammering lately in our own ads, projects like these are where our practical expertise of the cattle business really give us an advantage. We know how to do the best livestock signs because, well, hmm, I've only hung up literally thousands of these in my lifetime as the official sign hanger (or assistant sign hanger to my dad) on the V8 showstring for the past 20 years.

I know Denver isn't quite on everyone's minds yet, but we are steadily working on Denver sign orders. Don't wait til the last minute because Denver projects are harder than normal show orders because we have the holidays of Christmas and New Years in the mix and that causes delays in shipping.

Probably the easiest thing to do is just fax us a copy of your show entries, and then we'll get to work. We also have a $500 package available that includes a banner and end panel signs. We look forward to talking with you and doing your signs!

10 Commandments of Showing

While I was working on some stuff for my new book, my dad offered me to go through his collection of old articles about showing that he had collected through the years. It's like Christmas in November getting to go through all the old stuff. One of my favorites I came across...a clipping called:

"The Ten Commandments For Parents of Kids Showing Beef Cattle"

by Clyde D Lane, Jr., Extension Specialist at the University of Tennessee

1. Thou shall NOT feed, train, and care for the animal...for you are trying to teach children responsibility.

2. Thou shall forgive a child for making mistakes in the showring...for you have made mistakes too.

3. Thou shall NOT get mad when the child forgets items in the showbox...for one day you might forget the whole showbox.

4. Thou shall help the show management. They are doing a good job at a job you would not want to do.

5. Thou shall see that your child is on time for all show activities, for you would not want to wait on another.

6. Thou shall be sure that your child has the animals entered and the registration papers in order at the designated time.

7. Thou shall teach the child that winning a blue ribbin is a desirable goal, but making friends along the way is a much more worthy goal.

8. Thou shall NOT complain about the judge, for it is his opinion that has been sought that day.

9. Thou shall remember that livestock projects are teaching projects...not necessarily money-making projects.

10. Thou shall remember that the livestock project is a family project that should be enjoyed and supported by the entire family.

Tutorial Photoshop Typographic

Tutorial Photoshop Typographic

Christmas Gifts from RHD

Is it just me, or does it seem like it gets harder and harder to get gifts for those people in our lives that seem to have EVERYTHING already! Or, to find something unique? It never fails that year in and year out, lots of our livestock friends turn to RHD to help them come up with something really cool for Christmas designs.

Last year, one of our hardest kept secrets was the Christmas gift of a blog header design that Jon Blin gave to Crystal Young.

Barn banners are another really popular Christmas gift, like these shown here at Tusa Cattle.

In some cases, we have even done websites as a Christmas gift! The way we have found it works best is that you go ahead and book the website before Christmas. We will put up a special message like "Merry Christmas Dad...Welcome to your new web site to be designed by RHD" on the web site home page. On Christmas, you can tell the person to go to http://www.yourranch.com/ where they will see the special message. This is really cool and always is an exciting gift!

Another cool thing we have done is special photo collages mounted on canvas or gallery wrap. These are really neat too. We did one of these for the Klug family last year and they loved it.

So while it's never too early for Christmas gifts, there is a time when you can be too late. We need to get to work on Christmas items right away, preferably by December 1st.

Also if you are looking for some great unique items, visit these client web sites:

Tapi semenarik itukah isinya?

What Is O.C.D?

O.C.D stands for 'obsessive compulsive disorder' and is deemed an anxiety disorder.

Although not classed as mentally unstable, O.C.D sufferers have recurring obsessive thoughts related to a particular matter. Normally to help themselves feel more at ease sufferers will do something about these thoughts, resulting in them  carrying out something that is either obsessive or compulsive or both.

If an O.C.D sufferer doesn't fix their obsessive thought, then uneasiness, fear, and the feeling of threat can grip them.

O.C.D is actually quite common and is surprisingly the fourth most common 'mental disorder', however it is not an illness and many sufferers are ordinary to talk to, they just have anxiety problems. Still, this is not healthy for the mind.

Many individuals who do have O.C.D, will tell you that what they're doing is irrational and maybe quite unreasonable, but they just don't feel safe or at ease without doing such a thing.

This is why logical reasoning and comforting words don't work for people with higher levels of this anxiety disorder.

What are Obsessions?

Obsessions are the images, impulses, and ideas that run through the sufferers mind over and over again. These may be permanent thoughts that always play upon the individuals mind, or thoughts that may arise from particular situations in which the thoughts are connected to.

A person suffering with O.C.D doesn't want to have these thoughts, but just cant help themselves from thinking them.

What are Compulsions

Obsessions are the thoughts that cause the person to become anxious or afraid, the behaviours that come about to help the individual (what the individual finds to help) deal with these situations - these are the compulsions and are sometimes described as ritualistic characteristics.

For example: An individual might feel anxious about saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, and so may retract socially as to avoid these situations and become very quiet when amongst people, as-well as having their communicational skills deteriorate.

Common obsessive and compulsive behaviour
  • Concern with dirt or germs.,
  • Excessive concern with environmental contaminants. Examples: asbestos, radiation, pesticides or toxic waste.,
  • Excessive concern with household items. Examples: cleansers, solvents.,
  • Bothered by sticky substances or residues. Examples: adhesives, chalk dust or grease.,
  • Concern or disgust with bodily waste or secretions. Examples: urine, faeces or saliva.,
  • Excessive concern with animals or insects. (Distinguished from Specific Phobia.),
  • Concerned will get ill because of contaminants. Examples: AIDS or cancer,
  • Concerned will get others ill by spreading contaminants,
  • No concern with consequences of contamination other than how it might feel.,
  • Fear of eating certain foods. Examples: excessive concern about risks of certain foods or food preparations. (Distinguished from concern in gaining weight.),
  • Excessive concern with becoming pregnant or of making someone pregnant,
  • Need for symmetry or exactness. Examples: certain things can’t be touched or moved, clothes organized in closet alphabetically, bothered if pictures are not straight or canned goods not lined up. (Distinguished from O.C.P.D.),
  • Exactness in dressing. Examples: excessive concern about appearance of clothing such as wrinkles, lint, loose threads; may not wear garments out of concern they will become worn.,
  • Exactness or symmetry in grooming. Examples: bothered if hair not parted exactly straight or hair not precisely same length on each side of the head.,
  • Fear of saying the wrong thing or not saying it “just right”.,
  • Need for exactness related to feared consequences.,
  • Excessively bothered by things not sounding “just right.”,
  • Finds certain sounds irritating. Examples: “sh” sound, lisps, static/noise, sniffing, coughing, ticking clocks, dripping water. (Distinguished from irritability not specific to O.C.D.),
  • Arranging and re-arranging objects to prevent bad outcomes.
When does O.C.D begin?

O.C.D affects all ages, from children to full-grown adults.
O.C.D can begin when you're a child (more common among ages 10-12); organising toys, having to carry out specific tasks, not stepping on cracks etc., these usually disappear with age.

For adults, O.C.D normally begins in the teens or early twenties, it can develop later on but isn't as common.

How bad can O.C.D get?

Quite a lot of sufferers don't develop really serious obsessive and compulsive behaviour, but for those who do, living a normal life can become very difficult and sometimes impossible.

Cigarilos, hiduplah seorang raja bernama Minak Djinggo.
cantik jelita, namanya Sri Wedari. Suatu ketika putri sedang bermain di Long Beach , tiba-tiba

Sebelum berangkat sang pendekar mohon pamit "Wis mi lak suhu" kata
sang pendekar. Dijawab oleh suhu "Get lucky Strike muridku". Sang rajapun
bukit DUNHILL akhirnya sang pendekar berhasil meyelamatkan sang putri.
merayakan kegagahberanian anda, mengapa malah murung??? bukankah
pendekar pernah bilang "Asyiknya rame-rame!!!" Pendekarpun menjawab
"Pria Punya Selera". Lalu apa maumu, tanya sang raja. Dijawab oleh
sang pangeran "Minta Krisdayanti Dong !!!".
